The Matrix is an icon of popular culture, with phrases referring to it permeating our day to day language. With idioms like â€Å"Glitch in the matrix† and †take the red pill† many people make reference to this (at the time) groundbreaking work of fiction in their everyday lives. However, most are ignorant of the biggest influences on the franchise as a whole. India, and more specifically Buddhism has a permeating influence on the background and the story of The Matrix trilogy. The inspiration for this classic trilogy, is derived from a place of enlightenment. In this paper, I will discuss the instances of potential inspiration from Buddhism and explaining how they prove that The Matrix has its roots in Buddhism. Throughout the film, there are several direct parallels to the story of the Buddha as well as some of the supporting elements drawn from Buddhism. Among the many examples the foremost that stands out is that of Neo the main character as a parallel of the B uddha. Others are instances include examples such as the boy with a spoon.
